South Central Extension / Downtown Hub Light Rail Extension

2026 Crescordia Award Recipient

The Governor’s Award for Arizona’s Futures recognizes projects that reflect the values, priorities, and long-term vision of Governor Katie Hobbs—investments that strengthen communities, expand opportunity, and prepare Arizona for a more resilient future.

The South Central Extension and Downtown Hub Light Rail Extension exemplifies that vision. By extending light rail 5.5 miles into South Phoenix and adding 12 new stations, this project reconnects historically underserved communities to jobs, education, healthcare, and cultural destinations—advancing equitable access and economic mobility.

This project reflects Governor Hobbs’ commitment to people-centered infrastructure—transportation investments that address heat, safety, and quality of life while supporting workforce development and local economies. Designed by AECOM with community health and dignity at the forefront, the corridor features shaded stations, safer pedestrian and bicycle connections, public art by Arizona artists, and more than 500 new trees that reduce extreme heat and improve walkability. As Valley Metro’s first two-line system, it also strengthens regional connectivity and builds long-term resilience into Arizona’s transportation network.

This is why Governor Hobbs selected the South Central Extension and Downtown Hub Light Rail Extension, because it demonstrates how thoughtful public investment can create lasting, inclusive impact and help build an Arizona that works better for everyone, today and into the future.
