The Valley Metro South Central Extension and Downtown Hub Light Rail project is a major expansion of Phoenix’s transit system, delivering 12 new light rail stations and extending service 5.5 miles into South Phoenix. The project reconnects historically underserved neighborhoods to downtown, employment centers, education, healthcare, and cultural destinations, while transforming Valley Metro into its first two-line system. Designed by AECOM with community health and dignity at its core, the corridor features shaded stations, public art by Arizona artists, safer pedestrian and bike connections, and more than 500 new trees that reduce heat and enhance walkability. Through sustained community collaboration and workforce investment, this project demonstrates how transit infrastructure can advance equity, resilience, and long-term community benefit.
