¡Sombra! Experiments in Shade was an innovative public art initiative that brought together local and national artists, civic leaders, and community members to explore creative solutions to extreme urban heat in Phoenix. Building on the City of Phoenix’s long-standing commitment to artist-designed shade structures, the project aligns with the 2025–2030 Public Art Plan, which dedicates approximately $900,000 to shade, cooling, and heat mitigation efforts. Funded in part by Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Public Art Challenge, ¡Sombra! selected nine artists from more than 80 submissions to create temporary shade installations using innovative materials and design processes. Unveiled across the city in spring 2025, the project engaged the public through a celebratory community event and demonstrated how art, innovation, and collaboration can advance climate-responsive design and public well-being.
