For generations, Piestewa Peak has been a place of connection—where Arizonans come to challenge themselves, find quiet, and experience the Sonoran Desert. Recognizing the responsibility that comes with stewarding one of the Southwest’s most beloved landscapes, the City of Phoenix undertook a thoughtful, multi-phase modernization of the Piestewa Peak Trailheads. Since 2016, more than $26 million in voter-approved funding has renewed aging infrastructure while honoring a “Preserve First” philosophy. Through careful planning by J2 Design, the project protected 88 percent of existing vegetation, improved safety and accessibility, and introduced innovative stormwater systems that safeguard the desert ecosystem. Today, a connected network of trailheads offers welcoming, sustainable access—ensuring this treasured landscape can be experienced and protected for generations to come.
