Arizona Sustainable Economic Development Learning Lab

2026 Crescordia Award Recipient

The Arizona Sustainable Economic Development Learning Lab is a first-of-its-kind professional development program designed in Arizona to strengthen climate-resilient economic growth statewide. Initiated by the Flinn Foundation, the Lab was created through an unprecedented collaboration of eighteen Arizona organizations spanning the private, public, and nonprofit sectors. The curriculum equips economic developers with practical tools to evaluate environmental impacts, communicate sustainability outcomes, and integrate resilience into development strategies. Delivered through a five-day learning experience combining in-person and virtual instruction, the inaugural cohort brought together 35 participants from urban, rural, and Tribal communities across Arizona. Their capstone projects addressed local challenges ranging from heat mitigation to small-business sustainability. Now housed with the International Economic Development Council, the program provides certification credit and a scalable model for aligning economic competitiveness with long-term climate resilience.
