Janice A. Cervelli, 2014 Chair of the Board

Diane BrossartJanice A. Cervelli, FASLA, FCELA, is Dean of the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Professor of Landscape Architecture at The University of Arizona. Prior to her arrival in Tucson in 2008, Cervelli served in a number of administrative roles, including as Dean of the College of Architecture, Arts, and Humanities at Clemson University from 2000-2007; founding director of the Clemson University Restoration Institute; and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and Director of the Teaching and Learning Center at the University of Kentucky. While a faculty member at the University of Kentucky from 1981-2000, Cervelli was recognized with the University Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and as a Master Teacher by the Gamma Sigma Delta honorary society. She also received the Outstanding Teaching Award from the United States Department of Agriculture.

Cervelli received a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Guelph of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. For her work as a student at Purdue University and the University of Guelph, the American Society of Landscape Architects recognized Cervelli with an Honor Award and Merit Award.  The College of Agriculture at Purdue University has recognized her as an Outstanding Alumna.

Cervelli is currently serving as chair-elect of Arizona Forward and has held numerous national and international leadership positions, including, president of the American Society of Landscape Architects and the Council of Educators of Landscape Architecture. In recognition of her professional accomplishments she has been honored with induction as fellow by both organizations. She has also served as a delegate to the International Federation of Landscape Architects and as Vice President for Education of the Landscape Architecture Foundation.  Cervelli is an Associate Member of the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and serves on the Advisory Board of ULI Arizona. She is a founding board member of ULI South Carolina.

Having practiced, taught, and published in the area of urban design and planning, Cervelli has provided assistance to a number of cities throughout the United States including Boston, MA; Cincinnati, OH; Louisville and Lexington, KY; and Greenville, Charleston, and Columbia, SC.  She is currently working with City of Tucson Mayor Jonathon Rothschild and city staff on the development of models for reorganization of city planning and design services to better position the city for future growth.

Cervelli has been actively involved in design and planning of Tucson’s new Modern Street Car corridor.  As a member of the City of Tucson’s Main Gate Overlay District Design Review Committee and Stakeholder’s Committee, Cervelli has been advising on the first transit-oriented overlay-zoning district to be approved by the City of Tucson.  As the new chair of the Downtown Tucson Partnership, Cervelli is working with merchants, business owners and others in revitalization of downtown Tucson, particularly infill, streetscape, and open space development.  On a larger scale, Cervelli serves as a board member of regional and statewide visioning entities including Imagine Greater Tucson, Arizona Forward, and the Arizona Urban Land Institute.

The American Council on Education selected Dean Cervelli as a Fellow in 1998. During her fellowship, she served as an understudy to Dr. William Kirwan, President of The Ohio State University and Dr. Robert Glidden, President of Ohio University. She has been recognized with the CELA Outstanding Administrator Award by the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture.  Dean Cervelli is currently working on a book entitled Le Citta' Murata Italiana--The Walled Towns of Italy.
